Stop Newcastle Airport expansion

Aviation expansion: dangerous and makes no sense

The Airport's Master Plan and its business plans for the future include:

  • A massive increase to 9 million passengers by 2040 (more than doubling)

  • A massive increase in numbers of take-offs and landings

  • A longer runway for larger aircraft to fly to more distant destinations.

  • Possible increase in night flights

  • Noise and the damaging effects on accelerating climate change will both increase dramatically.

  • A recent YouGov poll found that 61% of people think that aviation expansion is wrong

  • The government is happy for this destructive expansion to go ahead. – it’s basically pro flying.

  • Only 1 in 14 UK flights are for business. Business travel has peaked.

  • Around 80% of flights in and out of the UK are for leisure. 70% are for Brits going on holiday taking huge sums of money out of the country – a massive net loss to the economy.

  • 50% of the UK population never flies. 15% of the population takes 70% of flights, 33% of these taking 6 or more flights a year.

  • The increase in flights across the UK would more than wipe out any carbon savings from the government’s clean energy plans and further accelerate climate change.

  • More flights = accelerated climate change, more pollution.
